In Ireland it was the same; on Halloween children would call to houses and ask ‘penny for the púca’ (ghost) and if they sang a song or recited a little poem, they would get a treat and a few pennies. It was such fun, you had to perform something to get the goodies!

It seems to me that most Irish people take their duty to vote seriously. This, I think is a case of the best of perhaps not an ideal set of candidates!
