IMBRACE
@imbrace-erc.bsky.social
A research project funded by the European Research Council that analyzes the nexus between climate change, health, and immigration. Led by Panagiota Kotsila at @icta-uab.bsky.social

As the planet heats and floods intensify, who is most at risk? We're taking advantage of #DayOfClimateAction to share our 2 reports on how #climatechange deepens health inequalities for migrants in Europe how justice should lead adaptation 👇

🏙️ On #WorldHabitatDay we highlight how #housing inequality shapes #climateustice in EUcities. ‼️ #Migrants + refugees are more likely to live in overcrowded, poorly insulated homes, increasing heat-related health risks and deepening social vulnerability. @icta-uab.bsky.social @bcnuej.bsky.social

🍇🍽️ Migrant workers feed Europe & keep services running, yet are the most exposed to the #ClimateCrisis, placed in precarity not by origin but by system. An Op-ed in @elpais coauthored by @pkotsila.bsky.social @bcnuej.bsky.social @icta-uab.bsky.social elpais.com/clima-y-medi...

🌊 Migrants are often:

🔹Trapped in flood-prone housing.
🔹Left out of disaster alerts due to language barriers.
🔹Disproportionately affected by mental health trauma post-disaster
July 15, 2025 at 1:43 PM
🔴 In Europe:

🔺61,000+ heat-related deaths occurred in 2022 alone
🔺45.5% of non-EU migrants face poverty—vs. 18.9% of nationals
🔺Migrants are 3x more likely to live in overcrowded, heat-vulnerable housing
🔺Most climate health data is not broken down by race or migration status
July 15, 2025 at 1:43 PM
🌍 Today is EU Day for Victims of the Global Climate Crisis. #Climatejustice means recognizing that racialized migrants often face the highest risks—but remain invisible in data and planning.

At IMBRACE, we’re investigating how migration, housing, and urban planning interact to produce climate vulnerability—and how justice-based solutions can emerge from this understanding. #ClimateJustice #Heatwave #MigrantRights #EnvironmentalJustice #Barcelona #IMBRACEproject

There’s a clear connection:
Migration → Poor housing → Greater exposure to extreme heat → Higher health risks and mortality.
Climate impacts are not evenly distributed.
July 2, 2025 at 9:25 AM
Yet across Europe, health data is rarely broken down by race, ethnicity, or migration status. This means the true impact of heat on migrants often stays hidden—out of sight, out of policy.

📸 This week’s headlines in Spain:
— Heat-related deaths
— A migrant family living in unsafe conditions in Barcelona
In cities like Barcelona, migrants are more likely to live in substandard housing: overheated spaces, no insulation or ventilation. This isn’t just about climate, it’s about inequality

🔥 Europe is facing another deadly #heatwave. But not everyone is equally at risk. Some people are systematically more exposed, more vulnerable—and less visible in the data. A thread 🧵👇
