As pointed out in NPR’s article, it was FDR, a Democratic president, who made it a federal holiday. And it was originally designed in 1892 to combat marginalization of people due to ethnicity. Columbus Day may be the original woke holiday.

ANSEP originally stood for Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program. They get lots of dollars to support Alaska Native education. The problem is that they’ve used those dollars for years for non-Native students. Now they’ve removed even the mention of Alaska Native people from their website.
