My take - the ending is almost everything. It is where you reward the reader for investing time into your story. If you botch the beginning, they'll simply skip the rest - no harm done. But if you mess the ending up, you can cause the reader to regret the attention they've already spent.

It wasn’t us (categorically) but many people did vote against their own interests. And I’m pretty sure the hurt will be nearly universal.
