Board games bring me joy, and joy is a protest.
It’s about the memories more than the mechanisms.
3rd game of Sanctuary tonight.
Less moving parts than Ark Nova. Plays in 1/2 the time.

Theme is the same. Actions not identical but familiar.

Sanctuary = more puzzley w/scoring combos.
Ark Nova = maximizing current turns to maximize future turns.

I’m happy to play/keep both in my collection.

The Voynich Puzzle lives up to the name, as it is quite puzzly (but also some fun combos).

The only way to play with a deck of cards today.
Let’s get rid of all the Jokers too.

If you are near West Chester, OH stop by the brand new game store, Tabletop Cincy. Just opened this week, with a huge selection of games at great prices.

Plus, you might bump into me working part time there. So that’s something.

…and now the lowlight of the Food & Wine Festival: Beijing Zhajiang noodles.
I didn’t even finish mine. The noodles were bone dry. No sauce at all remained on them, if any was added to begin with. Just an abysmal offering I had high hopes for going in.

10. Basque cheesecake with orange sauce
It’s a fairly standard cheesecake but a well-executed one. I could have used a bit more of the orange sauce on mine but others appeared more generously topped.

9. (Realized I misnumbered earlier going through security) Street Corn Dumpling
The dumplings to the right in this picture, the street corn flavor were easily the best of the three dumplings offered at the new “Gyozas of the Galaxy” booth. These would make an excellent appetizer at a Mexican spot.

7. Lump crab cake
Lots of subtle flavors in this little cake. The remoulade sauce was tasty with a bit of kick, but maybe a bit too much on the relatively thin cake.

6. Boeuf Bourguignon short ribs
Vibes of an elevated pot roast. Delicious pairing of the tender short ribs and smooth mashed potatoes.

5. Liquid Nitrogen frozen pumpkin cheesecake
The texture was a somewhat odd blend of the mushiness of pumpkin pie with denser thawing bits. The flavor was excellent though and the walnuts added a nice crunch on top.

3 & 4. Slow roasted pork slider and rice bowl
Both offerings from the Hawaii booth hit it out of the park. The slider was the perfect blend of sweet and savory with pork and pineapple. The rice bowl had Spam and a wonderful umami from the sauce.

3. Tostada de carnitas.
The refried beans base was seasoned perfectly and the carnitas were tender and juicy. Excellent dish.

2. Schinkennudeln
Tastes like the most delicious mac & cheese ever. The cheese was so tasty and not overly toasted on top. The ham added a perfect bit of saltiness.

At the airport waiting to return home after a week at Walt Disney World.

Here are the top ten items I sampled at the Epcot Food & Wine Festival, in no particular order.

1. Carrot cake. Perfectly dense and not dry. The icing really put this over the top.

Lovely shirt to wear at Walt Disney World, right?

I’m not a prude but there are literally thousands of children all around. SMH

I know AI is trash, but what if more Tilly Norwood’s meant fewer celebrities singing “Imagine” to us from their multi-million dollar mansions?

September was definitely a quality over quantity board game month for me. There has been a lot going on, and I don’t know that October will be any different. However playing fewer games means I remember each game with greater clarity than usual, and they were all wonderful.

Taught & played Tea Garden w/wifey tonight. Enjoyed it even more than my first play. There are a lot of action options each turn but figuring out the ideal path can be challenging. Plus, I love the look & color scheme of the game. (@capstone-games.com)

Nice mix of games played in August. Different complexities, game lengths, component types & mechanisms. The one similarity: all of them a lot of fun!
