I think that’s exactly it. The first game sets it up perfectly to show that he’s got a good heart where it counts and is loyal to those that deserve it. He’s morally gray and walks that line like a tightrope, but he never tries to hide it. What you see is what you get.

Why does that actually feel like a plausible reason for the continued bastardization of his character? He wasn’t perfect in the first game but he wasn’t whatever he’s become now.

Yes!! It made the brain worms return! It also partially inspired the new opening scene in chapter 1.
