The soundtrack for FFVI helps tell the story better than any other game I know. Its themes work like traditional leitmotifs in an opera.

These are all good answers, but I’d ad FFX. A good middle point: if you’re drawn toward the story, go earlier. If you’re drawn toward the graphics and mechanics, go later.

I love him so much, though. One of the most dramatic character developments in all of video games. One of the characters who made me cry the most.
