'We'll make the country and its public services better' was also a promise in 2024 in this sense, one which will now be broken, even if it was not an explicit focus of the campaign but a matter of Labour omitting discussion of hard choices, voters' incorrect intuitions about the party etc

(I know you're not saying otherwise, but some of the posts I've seen on this topic seem to be suggesting at times that constant access to phones in schools and/or unlimited internet use is somehow made necessary by this crime and others like it, and I think that's counterproductive to say the least)

... it seems more useful to me to abstract away from the individual to the higher level debates. And when we do that it's clear that *both* virulent transphobia *and* internet/device addiction are big problems, that teens may be particularly vulnerable to both, and that one doesn't excuse the other.

I just think, what are the primary issues and what are the secondary ones? I understand that Ghey has her own ownership of the story and the trans community has another, different one, and that they are in tension and that's why this is a sore subject. But . . .

Yeah, as you say that's not a healthy relationship with a phone, even if some of the people she was communicating with were themselves supportive. Sadly it's not atypical either; most teenagers seem to be totally addicted to their phones! So am I! Maybe we should not accept this as Fine Actually!
