I don't think that when people grow up, they will become more broad-minded and can accept everything. Conversely, I think it's a selecting process, knowing what's the most important and what's the least. And then be a simple man. The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives the passion that she shows. The beauty of a woman grows with the passing years.

Hong Sang-soo. In Our Day (2023) ★★★★

Here, the two parallel stories make a puzzle, as the two triads swap between roles, you guess he is her now he is he now, they're tapping gochujang spoons in between the narratives. There's something borderline metaphysical how the repetitions of a conversation in one thread leap into the next one and repeat there too, not even roles or selves but vibrating qualities.

But this is a sideshow. Hong Sang Soo is a tension artist in reverse, each film with a device or a gesture that adds meaningless fizz. It's no good to film the realtime of less than human less than phenomena in search of boredom. Nobody watches "Empire", just knowing the gesture is enough. To truly worship the banal means taking care to string out its pleasures, to rest the brain with some flash so it can push farther into the de-mediated open of carefully wrought performances of earnest politeness.

I worry "Meaning is cowardice" will become some kind of slogan for Hong's films. It's true, it is cowardice, but only in the sense of stripping away veils or keeping eyes clear. Abandoning the enclosures of narrative isn't abandoning structure but freeing it to the balletics of this wonky parallelism, and the joys of being with another person captured so perfectly.

There is a mood at the end of Hong's best films that is mentally extinguished. The thought is not needed, the moment is spent, is being spent. That is much more important than avoiding coward. It is relaxed immediacy.

The allegory is too grand. The moment is too small. Scorsese has a modernist theologian's timepiece. The original sin is not some stain that lingers on all Adam's descendants, but an immanently occurring event. In every serious moral choice, the fall is lurking, each decision to harm is an event as cosmically significant as the expulsion from Eden. But Christ offers the too-easy counter-movement, the cop-out choice, even when it isn't taken. All he had to do was admit it. All we have to do is admit it. Just say it, say you're sorry, you were weak and greedy, got yourself turned around by Uncles Hale and Sam, you too can be free from the hell you've made of yourself. (One need only look at today's Germans, racist rabble shifting which semites to anti-, to suspect that apology is not so clean.)

Scorsese rarely lets his worms escape, but they usually solicit us to suffer with them, decadence and then reflective insight. It's even more stark when they do get free for a minute. Bickle and La Motta, the Laurel and Hardy of the damned, two stray pubic hairs stuck in the devil's bared teeth. But Ernest shows his worm, his rotten teeth and slick wicked stupidity, so when she asks him what he was shooting her with, we know what we'd do, we'd do better, we good little catholics. We'd confess and sit in the pews for a month with our million hail maries. Look at the pieties of production. The film offers its metatext as an apology, an exemplar of what Ernest could have been, what we can ourselves be. But an apology, even one made with indigenous participation, is nothing more than good manners.

Ironically, Scorsese already looked into the genocide of indigenous peoples of America with more depth and seriousness. In Taxi Driver, The Searchers in the City, analogy allowed Scorsese the moral strength to deal directly with the wound cut open and held open by the morality that tried to cure it. Movie Magic John Wayne's good heart, sadly muddled by racism, becomes the reality of Travis Bickle's pervert vengeance. In Killers of the Flower Moon, faced with the Osage as real people, he retreated to allegory and apology and childish stories of forgiveness.

there's a tone of writing in internet articles that report on what a tweet says, it is maybe at its most intense and distinct on soccer and fandom websites, I can only describe it as "ozone smell"

Though it looks like Park has been able to rebuild a life for herself and her family away from Seoul, her financial situation is probably not as affluent as before. When the scandal was at its peak, she was also criticized along with her husband and had to issue a statement of apology. But the public’s sympathy seems to have swayed in her favor now, given that most of the comments under the video praised her for her honesty and charm.
