The Graeber (and Wengrow) book is good. It almost made me want to teach anthropology again, just so I could use the book in a class. My primary critique is that it did C Crumley dirty, one footnote at the end when they were basically using the same ideas the whole time is bs.

Yeah, they had to push it back after they fired a bunch of the dev team probably because they were about to make a push to unionize. www.cbc.ca/news/enterta...
Grand Theft Auto makers accused of union-busting after firing employees in Canada, U.K. | CBC News
The company behind the Grand Theft Auto games fired more than 30 employees last week in what a union leader called an egregious example of union-busting, with some effects being felt in Canada.

And also, the Dems should feed people! Free pancake breakfasts in impoverished areas instead of attack adds. Hand out donuts at local concerts. Campaign volunteers also working at food banks. The DNC should be committed to doing good things outside of government to demonstrate their values.

And the Great Lakes, so the middle of the country. People forget that as well. Chicago falls within the 100-mile zone that is a maritime border on the Great Lakes. So the border laws apply there too.

They are Christian evangelicals which isn't inherently bad but they invited Bundy to speak in 2019 and then backtracked. They have also had RFK giving an anti vax speech. Sketchy. I was upset when I found out about it, but there are better places to buy seeds (with better germination rates too).
August 6, 2025 at 4:53 PM
I hate to tell you this... seeds even! it just doesn't end: Baker Creek is known to be very right wing, racist and duplicitous about GMOs in their catalog. They invited Cliven Bundy to speak at one of their open houses.

Agreed. And people are writing books, etc. on the topic. Including this research article, which I found mildly encouraging: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

A citation standard for AI is the least of higher education’s worries.

Studies critiquing AI also need to cite AI, a citation standard is just documentation and I’d rather see more of that with AI related topics/use than less.

There is giant military parade happening on flag day basically at the behest of our wanna be dictator on his birthday. It is a good day to protest regardless of who is supporting it. No one is sponsoring my time or my sign.
June 13, 2025 at 1:42 PM
Kristi Noem just referred to elected officials as "burdensome" and desecrated the first amendment. Trump sent marines to stand against peaceful protestors. This is a budding dictatorship. You are doing NOTHING to stop it.

It is past time to bring articles of impeachment. Our democracy is at stake
June 12, 2025 at 7:40 PM
Yes. And the fact that there are democrats cosponsoring this shit is... I hardly have words.

To be clear: passing a resolution in MSU faculty senate changes NOTHING about MSU University policy. The MSU administration has not signed onto any mutual aid/collective agreement, and isn't necessarily supporting this action (they haven't said anything). Faculty have little power.

Yes, give us safe Kei cars already! Chevy Bolt is okay in some ways, but I'd really like the Nissan Sakura or similar with a little more range. www.wired.com/review/revie...
April 16, 2025 at 5:12 PM
We know its bad. We can't do anything about it. You can. This is impeachable behavior. So impeach.

Our democracy is at risk. Do something. Also quit with the unanimous consent and start acting like a working opposition.

Some of that may be on PolicyMap, not sure if it is available on the free account though: www.policymap.com/blog/purged-...

I think tax boycotts could possibly be a way forward to create change in US government generally.
January 10, 2025 at 6:21 PM
Indeed. Also, have you heard of the Dead Internet Theory? Seems more and more real.

I just hate that so many resources are being dumped into AI applications that no one asked for or needs. I respect machine learning for some applications (medical imagery scanning, for example) but this is not one of them. Infuriating.

The article premise is absolutely correct but the solutions are lacking. People under the age of 30 aren't reading long form journalism. Every prominent Democratic politician needs a podcast, youtube and tiktok channel that is updated weekly, not just during an election period. So does the DNC.
December 12, 2024 at 3:38 PM
This is very common. I have observed that people search social media sites like TikTok, Reddit, etc. for information instead of Google or other search engines, especially young people.

I saw a Trump/Kennedy sign recently. It was a printed sign, not handmade. It amused me in its high commitment to delusion.
November 1, 2024 at 2:11 PM
Yes, good column! It is a concern for me as an employee in higher ed. If we lock the bathroom door and it says "occupied" on the lock is that putting us at more risk than a room with glass doors we need to barricade? I should not have to think about this and yet I do. And there is little guidance.

Honestly, I remember nothing about that book except your lovely cover art decades later so it was money well spent for them, imo.
February 21, 2024 at 4:11 PM
Yes, I knew you were an author. Also amusing.
