This title is most famously associated with a portfolio of 12 prints created by Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky in 1922. The Art: Each print in Kandinsky's portfolio is an abstract, "autonomous microcosm" or a world unto itself. The prints demonstrate the unique effects of three different printmaking techniques: Lithography (4 prints) Woodcut (4 prints) Etching / Drypoint (4 prints) The Meaning: As a teacher at the Bauhaus, Kandinsky explored abstraction as a kind of spiritual language. The title Kleine Welten reflects his idea of the world as a cosmic entity made up of many "independent, hermetic units".
