BBC really has its priorities straight when it comes to factual accuracy of their reporting.

Also, there are two sides to the perception that this was some kind of coincidental collaboration. W&C may not have intentionally "pinched" Franklin's data but Wilkins certainly felt that way.

👇
In private, Rosalind Franklin's colleague at King's College, Maurice Wilkins, begrudged that James Watson and Francis Crick had pinched their data. As per this letter that surfaced at auction.

And knowing Watson for his beliefs, I think he had a whole stack of those yardsticks to diminish people. If he worked in a modern university, he would have been a nightmare of a colleague.

I believe he also coined the phrase, “I’m not racist but….”.

Definitely can be CNS if exciting enough 😉

😮‍💨 these people...

Even an appeal of that rejection failed to acknowledge the thinly veiled racism in it. One of the authors spiralled down into severe mental illness soon afterwards (and I was hanging by a thread too). We soon decided to let the paper remain just as a preprint. Two years of science in the drain.

It’s also people’s mental health that these reviewers and editors impact. One of our papers (that remains unpublished because of the fallout) came back from @cp-cellrepmethods.bsky.social once with reviews saying (based on author names) that we were not native speakers, hence our writing was poor.

Congratulations!

Thank you Cathy, if I survive without this grant money, that is.

Admittedly, it hurts less now than how it did when I was an ECR.

Make sure to stand *exactly* in the same shape as the diagram on the body scanner.

But think about all those trees…

Hang in there Joby! I relate well to this scenario (and know I will be there again soon). It’s so important to remember that it’s not your failure, but the failure of the system that let talented scientists down like this.

I am only excited for you with your next job. It’ll be fab!

All emails with the words “decision” and “regret” need to be diverted to a special folder in your inbox, marked as read, and never be opened.

Life is too short to let down so much by bad news.
