Just finished reading about #sparta #history acoup.blog/2019/08/16/c.... The last section concludes "Sparta is not something to be emulated. It is a cautionary tale." When I started I thought I'd find something about super soldiers, but slavery and nobles instead... :P. Good #reputation though.
Collections: This. Isn’t. Sparta. Part I: Spartan School
This is Part I of a seven part series (I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, Gloss., Retrospective) comparing the popular legacy of Sparta (embodied in films like 300) with the historical ancient state. Toda…

#GenerativeAI is useful for problems that are bothersome to produce (or why hand it off?) and are easy to verify (since it's not very reliable). Domain experts can easily verify more complex things, enabling them to make better use of it in those domains.

The recursive corollary to the famous #Sturgeon'sLaw, "90% of everything is crud": "Everything* is crud. * except possibly 1 item". This follows as #Sturgeon'sLaw can be applied recursively to smaller and smaller subsets until everything is crud or only one item remains.

Saw #KPopDemonHunter and #Nimona last night with the wife. She noted that like #Frozen, both have the theme of not hiding who you are. Implies culturally we conceal. We also shouldn't be aggressively in-your-face though. What does a healthier balance look like?

Went to the #NoKings protest in Provo - was fun, talked with some interesting people there.

I am what I choose to be. And I choose to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, a dragon, a programmer, and a teacher. None of those are easy choices, but they are some of my choices.

Your proving might not come like Joseph, Jacob, or Moroni, but it will come. Those trials are evidence of God's love, and shape us to be able to stand with Him in glory. #ElderEyring #GeneralConference

Loved the #GeneralConference message from #ElderHolland. Like the man born blind, #ElderHolland is of age; would you not give his testimony at least some consideration? The Book of Mormon in his life is like the spit and clay that healed the man born blind. He closed with #AmazingGrace.

Noteworthy lesson shared by J Anette Dennis in #GeneralConference: If something goes wrong in someone's life, they don't need your judgment. They need your support.

To be open: I do not expect to ever get a #securityclearance. I believe #EdwardSnowden did the right thing by informing the public that their public servants were lying to them. Saving an innocent life from aggression might morally justify a temporary lie. Pride and control never does.

Nothing terribly exciting happening around here recently. Applying to some faculty positions, designing my next study, and poking into some bugs for #SkyLords. Though #GeneralConference is in three days, which is pretty exciting. Expect a post or two about things I thought were interesting :).

Had some incredible Root Beer Float flavored cheesecake at a Ward BBQ on Saturday. The chef is starting a food truck locally; the Cheesecake Alchemist. I'm not getting anything for sharing this, was just really impressed.

"Political violence is so particularly abhorrent... [it] chills the exchange of ideas which is the lifeblood of our democratic republic. By taking a life engaged in the act of speech ... is an attack on the bedrock of our inspired constitution." - C. Shane Reese, from Utah Governor Cox. #CharlieKirk

A friend just lost some data and is investigating data recovery services. That makes today #backups awareness day. Make sure you have a backup plan for your personal files. Make sure it's automatic. Make sure you check that it's running occasionally. Backups are important. Don't lose data.

Please be sane and sober. Contrails are real, #chemtrails are not. People may lie; don't pick beliefs first and then assume those who disagree are lying #confirmationbias. Probable truth comes from reason (such as math) and from experienced patterns. Ask, "does this fit" and repeat; fix mismatches.

Starting to get out of being the third sickest in my life. Worst was chicken pox when I was around 2 or 3. Second worst was during a family trip to Disneyland in December 2019 - was out for 3-4 days. Fourth was a two-day migraine while at boarding school. Bad timing, missed a lot of #USENIX2025 :(.

Going to present a poster of some of my work at #SOUPS2025 in a couple days. Exciting :).

#GenerativeAI is pretty nifty. It can get you from a 0 (interested) to a 1 (entry level). Careful use by a 3 (skilled professional) to 5 (famous in your field) can maybe reach 2. It might save some cost/time, but won't give a competitive advantage. Use it when quality doesn't matter, or a fun toy.

Most important (computer) security advice:
- If something feels wrong it probably is.
- Urgency usually hides a lie
- Don't leave things unlocked
- Install updates, regularly
- Backup your data, regularly
- Avoid irreversible transactions, like mailing cash or gift cards

Accounting is about putting labels on numbers. Those numbers are only ever integers. They might represent tenths of a gram or hundredths of a cent, but they are always integers. Programmers: only use integers and just change them for display.

Reviewing a friend's paper. Corporate voice is a trap, promulgated by writers trying to hide behind a faceless facade. Like it, academic writing should focus on facts and avoid slang, exaggeration, and assumptions ("our nation"). Unlike it, avoid passive voice, big words, and let it be _your_ voice.

Like many, I have a goal of self-sovereignty. Searching today, I disagree with some claims I saw. God (accepting He exists, since He does) is self-sovereign, and we are His children. How then would it make sense to reject His teaching us to be like Him, given a goal of self-sovereignty?
