you do also need to have ffmpeg available on your PATH for it to be able to merge the video and audio streams together, but that's a one-time setup thing

yt-dlp still works fine! it's a command line tool but it's braindead easy to use. "yt-dlp [video url]" to download in whatever the highest available quality is. and if it doesn't work, run "yt-dlp -U" to update to the latest version where they've presumably fixed whatever broke
