Saying goodbye to @alanmonziani.bsky.social, a star PhD student who submitted his thesis and needs to flee Israel through the desert (literally) to his home in Italy. Alan started his PhD in the fall of 2020, so he missed the peak of Covid, but been with us through many exciting times 1/

SLAMseq/RNAseq Bsky! We're doing SLAMseq (30 minutes labeling, NEB RiboMinus library prep). Sometimes it works fine, but recently we get libraries that have unusually GC-rich reads (and no coverage of our favorite AT-rich gene). It seems that converted RNA somehow gets depleted? Anyone seen this?

Otherwise, I'm generally late to submit my report ~50% of the time, but typically by no more than a week or so (most journals have deadlines designed to be unreasonable). Still engaging lab members in ~50% of the reviewing.

Time for the annual peer-review summary! I did 46 peer reviews in 2024. A busier year than 2022-23, but still sub-2021 levels. This year I attempted to review revisions same-day, which worked ~75% of the time (the other 25% took way longer...).

Year in peer review wrapped. Still have not fully recovered from the sabbatical + post-tenure administrative overload. Bummer to say, % of the 22 manuscripts that were truly exciting/inspiring was not very large...

Celebrating 10 years of the Ulitsky lab! It's been quite a ride, and it was great to get together with (most) of the lab members, past and present.
