I hear that's an experience many Americans make. Which is strange: Bavaria is very unlike the rest of Germany. In a lot of ways it's our Texas (granted, many of our ideas of what Americans are like are Texas with a bit of California thrown in)

I'll remember your fondness of my native land in the wars to come

With damn good reason

It certainly worked better than appeasement

Uncut Gems but set in a fake-money gambling ring at a high school sounds amazing

Now there's a man of the people! I'd say the Democratic ticket for 2028 is already coming together

For a sec I thought the thing in the middle was money and I wanted to go "wait a sec" but it's not they're just playing a card game
For what it's worth I don't think fake-money gambling is harmful in the slightest, and it's more complicated cause Poker is very much a game people play for fun

Yes I feel this is somewhat underselling how, in fact, an extreme amount of people in the middle or at the bottom of society are Very Online

Read this the other day and thought it was resonant with what you’ve been saying about this for a while now.

The problem with that is that there's aspects of objective reality you cannot bring into contact with people in a modern post-industrial state. Some form of telecommunication IS in fact necessary for society to function as it does right now

I agree with Will that this is a problem for all of society, not just billionaires. Yes, it's arguably worse for them because they can afford to overall be even more shut off, but we wouldn't be in this mess if it didn't affect most people to some degree

I think I've seen what the thing Americans call non-cursive handwriting looks like, and it seems infinitely more tedious than cursive, though I guess easier if you were never taught proper handwriting

It actually creeped me out lol, when I first saw the woman I didn't realise she was on her phone and that's why her posture was weird, so my brain went "wait, IS that a human?"

I learned the letter separately, but it was the cursive version, joining them together just made sense. And I guess my teaching might have slightly differed from others because I skipped the 1st grade.
December 17, 2025 at 3:38 PM
Hm, that's weird, we only ever learned cursive. Also, I get you about the numbers, it's never something specific but when I handwrite in English and have to insert numbers they'll look off, maybe it's that

Anything you absorb through the gums has to hit way harder without teeth, really this was meant to be

Then I think the problem is just that I'm German and writing is taught differently here. I still don't really understand why you would ever teach it differently, it's way faster and no less readable than separate letters
December 17, 2025 at 4:20 AM
One thing I never get is the cursive part: That's just handwriting, right? Maybe I'm misunderstanding it, but why would you write out the letters individually, doing every word in a flowing line is way faster!

Don't call the boys when they're in trouble if you can't take the heat. I've read enough Internet stories that if any guy I know calls me at an odd hour I am already mentally prepared to help dispose of a body and rehearse a story for the cops

Yes, I think we as a society need to pivot away from video and back towards text for a bunch of reasons, primarily that short-form video is Lame

democracy 🤝 capitalism

the feedback loops don't work when the institutions get taken over by people who've achieved escape velocity from the incentives

Maybe slightly strange question, but it's something I've noticed multiple times and felt the desire to ask: Does that necklace have any special meaning? I don't think I've seen many jewellery designs quite like it.
