And now you come barking up my—” he cut himself off, chuckling and shaking his head. “I swear you have an addiction to creating unnecessary conflict in your life.” “I wouldn't have come to you with this without his blessing.” Adrian let out a scoff of disbelief. “Wouldn't you, now?” Olrox pursed his lips. He supposed he deserved that, too. He braced himself for one Adrian's lectures, but when it didn't come, he took the opportunity to change the subject. “…He said he could taste me in you.” Adrian blinked, his lips parting slightly on a silent gasp. “And it drives some part of me mad,” Olrox confessed. “That he’s tasted you before I have. Because—because you're mine. Because we belong to each to each other. Don't we? This half-consummated bond we share?” Adrian wet his lips and swallowed. “What are you saying, Olrox?”

“…Come now,” Olrox said, giving him a final squeeze before letting go. “You should feed again.” Mizrak nodded lifelessly, watching as Olrox began the familiar routine of removing his clothes. He would undress, lie down, and tell him to let the hunger take over. And for two days, he had. Fed upon him like an animal, telling himself he couldn't help it. That his new, vampiric instincts were to blame. But now his head was clear, and it just felt wrong. Wrong to take even more from this man that had already given him so much. “Wait,” Mizrak said, stopping his hand where it was fingering the first of his buttons. Green eyes locked with his, brows furrowed in confusion. Swallowing thickly, Mizrak began to brush his thumb to and fro over Olrox's. He really was beautiful, Mizrak thought, and all that feeling came flooding back. Mere days ago, he'd bent and twisted it into disgust, contempt, hatred. Anything to deny the truth. But now Mizrak knew them for what they really were. All the things Olrox had told him they were. Longing. Desire. Love. “…Let me,” Mizrak whispered.

“Under Chālchiuhtlicue’s benevolent reign,” he went on, “humanity thrived in an era of peace and prosperity. But of course, this made Tēzcatlipōca jealous. He accused her of only pretending to love the people so they would sing her praises. Devastated, she shed tears that flooded the earth." At last, he set the quill down and nudged the journal across the table. Adrian studied the diagram with furrowed brows, tracing his fingers along the carefully arranged symbols. One gloved fingertip lingered on the sign for the flood–and his expression turned grave, as though it carried the weight of the grief of all the people who'd been washed away. "...A tragedy," Adrian said at last, his voice sounding just as heavy. "Indeed,” Olrox said, taking in the sight of him. There was so much compassion written on that face, the ache in his heart made plain in his eyes. But this was a story with a happy ending, and Olrox wanted to see how relief and joy might manifest there too. “Quetzalcōātl so loved humanity though,” he continued, “that he ventured into Mictlān–the underworld–to steal our bones back from the god of the dead. He then bled himself, and dipped our bones in his blood–imbuing them with life once more and ringing in the age of the Fifth Sun, Tōnatiuh.” Adrian looked up, and there it was: that pleased smile. "Certainly sounds like a feat worthy of worship," he said, turning to a blank page before brushing it with his sleeve and picking up the quill. "Quetzalcōātl is the most beloved of our gods for a reason," Olrox nodded–and now it was his turn to watch as Adrian scribbled down his own notes, an endearing little crease in his brow as he focused. “...and it is his blood, that gives you your power?” Adrian asked, tossing a fleeting glance at him before continuing to write. His cornsilk hair was cascading past his shoulder on one side, the length of it spilling across the table and glowing under the dim candlelight like molten gold. Like sunlight reflecting off the water's surface. “...Yes,” Olrox answered at last, his voice barely above a whisper. “Then do all of your people have his power?” “...No,” he shook his head. “At least, not nearly as strongly as I do. Adrian wrote a little while longer, then flipped the page back and forth a few times. Olrox braced himself for the natural follow-up question: why not? But instead, Adrian only asked, “...What about these symbols, here?” and pointed at the circle of days, and the cluster of boxes he'd drawn on the side. “What do they mean?” Olrox drew a deep breath, a not small wave of relief washing over him. “We feared that the gods would be too jealous to share the days amongst themselves, so we divided them. The ring holds the twenty days of our calendar. And those–” he nodded toward the boxes, “are the cencalli tonalli, or trecena, as the Spanish call them*.* You can think of them like weeks or months. Every day, every cencalli, is governed by one of the gods.”6 “Twenty days, thirteen months…” Adrian counted, humming contemplatively. “Two hundred sixty days in a year?” He concluded, looking back up at him. “That's highly unusual. I'd be curious to understand how your people arrived at that number, if you know.” Adrian's voice took on a different timbre when he was being scholarly–an alluring pur that made Olrox’s chest flood with a very different kind of warmth. And what a challenge he had presented, with those words: If you know. Of course he did. “Well–” Olrox began, wetting his lips, “we used two calendars. The 260-day ritual calendar, and the 360-day solar calendar. The ritual calendar was based on the movement of the morning and evening stars. Fifty-two solar years makes a xihuitl molpia–something like a century, as this is when–” “The two systems fall back into alignment,” Adrian finished, connecting the dots on his own. “You understood that the morningstar and eveningstar are one in the same and were tracking its orbital resonance with earth.”7 Olrox angled his head and stroked his throat. “...Yes.” “Incredible,” Adrian shifted in his seat, shaking his head in delighted disbelief. Had Trevor Belmont known, Olrox wondered, how lucky he was? Had he truly never asked to be turned–if for no other reason than to have more time to spend in this man's company? It seemed a condemnation of the entire family line, that a creature so lovely should hide itself away for so long.

Mizrak spun on his heels and started for the purple bike, sizing it up along with its rider. It was a powerful machine that seemed to be in excellent shape. Either this person knew how to take care of their bike, or had the money to pay someone who did. Their leathers were in equally pristine condition, but try as he might, Mizrox couldn't recognize the patch on their back. Some kind of snake with feathers. Aztec, the large rocker read across their shoulders–accompanied by the usual assortment of other patches: MC, Mexico City, 1519. The notion of a charter being founded in 1519 was ludicrous on its face–and Mizrak quickly decided it must be a bible verse. John, perhaps. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Mizrak buried the budding sense of kinship he caught rising in his chest and cleared his throat. “…This is a private club,” he said by way of greeting. The rider pulled off their helmet and shook out their hair–long, dark, smooth tresses that fell down to the small of their back. “…And?” they said, hanging the helmet off one of the handlebars before looking over their shoulder at him. Mizrak swallowed. The man before him had deep, sun kissed skin, a strong jawline with the cheekbones to match, and the most stunning green eyes he'd ever seen. “Don't worry. I never enter a place without an invitation.” The man said, gesturing to the flickering neon sign in the window. COME IN - WE'RE OPEN! Mizrak shook himself and folded his arms over his chest. “This place is affiliated.” An amused smile spread across the man's face as he swept his eyes over him; head to toe and slowly back up again. “So I can see. Was that the mayor I saw?” He asked coyly, looking over his shoulder to where the Mercedes was shrinking in the distance. “I wonder what sort of business a man like that might have with a place like this.” Mizrak shifted on his feet, suddenly feeling self-conscious. “If you're looking to grab a beer, there's a diner a few miles up the road,” he grumbled, nodding eastward. The man set his hands on his hips and eyed the facade of the club. “No,” he pouted, “I think I'm exactly where I need to be, Mizrak.” Mizrak refused to let that startle a reaction out of him–instead narrowing his eyes and watching as their visitor swung his leg over his bike to dismount it. He stood almost a head taller than Mizrak did, but he moved his long limbs gracefully. A breeze swept through the arid landscape–nothing but a line of asphalt for miles–and the fringes hanging from his vest swayed in concert with his hair, both grazing his hips. “You know my name,” Mizrak said, tore his eyes away. “How about you tell me yours?” “He wants you to rattle a few folks up, no?” The man asked, ignoring the request. “Convince them to sell their homes so his donor friends can break ground on their… luxury apartments? Shopping mall? Amusement par–” “Who the hell are you?” Mizrak demanded, shoving the man against the wall. He tilted his head at him and smiled. “You know, eventually that mayor of yours will be running for congress, or governor–and he'll have enough resources to not have to worry about holding up his side of whatever agreement you've struck with him.” Mizrak rolled his eyes. “Your concern is touching.” The man scoffed, and in one fluid motion, had Mizrak landing on his back on the dusty gravel of the parking lot. Movement through the club's windows caught his eyes, and Mizrak gave his men a slight shake of his head. He had the situation under control, he told himself. Perfectly under control. “If you think he won't sell you out at his earliest convenience, you're a fucking idiot,” the man said, crouching over him. “Eventually this charming little establishment of yours will the only thing standing in the way of more shareholder value.” “What do you want?” Mizrak gritted through his teeth. “I trust there's a point to all of this.” The man settled on his knees, the weight of him bearing down on Mizrak's hips. Fuck.
