Absolutely, spot on. A big issue is getting people to care about prevention. We'd rather hope for a mythical hero to fix everything after it falls apart rather than do the work of preventing it in the first place. Preservers minimize danger, and there can be no heroes where there is no danger.

I've always had trouble with "not past X o'clock" if I'm not doing well. Easier to keep to it if I'm winning though!

One thing that helps me is to sit down with a backout plan. Having something else I want to do lined up is usually enough incentive to leave (no matter how the game is going)
