I've been enjoying practicing #painting in #casein with a limited palette by doing 1 hour sketches in the morning before everyone wakes up. The brown paper I'm using pushes me toward an oil-like, opaque approach, but I'm going to keep trying transparent as well.
An evergreen tree, half-lit by the dawn reaches into a blue sky. part of a garage and very mangled car sit cloaked in shadow at the bottom of the painting. Another tree, this time deciduous, reaches into the light blue sky, half-lit by the dawn sun and towering over the shadow-cloaked houses below.

I had a meeting today where my role was passive, so I spent the time doing a quick 20 minute study of a photo I took this morning on a walk. I'm still trying to get used to casein. It dries and changes color and value in ways I'm not able to predict yet.

There is a fence on the left under more trees. Wires criss cross the sky between telephone poles. It's a middling effort, and lighter than intended, but I'm working on it.

A little artichoke doodle of some friends in the neighborhood who are no longer with us.

I just read Sun Flowers by @keezyyoung.bsky.social and found it lovely. Really pretty, interesting layout, touching story, cool paper!

I'm trying to learn how to use #casein so I'm doing little value studies. The thing that is killing me right now is how to blend gracefully between transparent and opaque use of the medium. It just dramatically shifts the hue and really dries way differently (darker/lighter) than it was when wet.

At the top, a small badly drawn cabin ... exists. 6. Dramatic mountains rise above a confusing lakeshore, done in a weird fashion in opaque use of casein. This dried much darker than expected. 7. a cliff lined seashore with waves crashing... meh . 8. An all too light rendering of a park originally painted by Monet. 9. A brightly lit lake and some low hills seen through a cover of trees and bushes.

There's something fitting about the juxtaposition of these two posts.
Black Aziz Anansi asks "Do you ever get sad about how many people have fully embraced anti-intellectualism?" Uncle Duke, in a post, just below this adds a caption "I think both sides are to blame here" to a photo which depicts a car sticking halfway out of the side of a building atop which a sign clearly states that the building is a "Drive-Thru Pharmacy".

Here are the only birds I've got. They were done up for a DnD campaign I ran my family through a few years ago. We played the whole Tyranny of Dragons campaign, but set in the world of Humblewood, so I had to recast all of the characters into animal people.
A humanoid rooster with evil yellow eyes, orange feathers, and a red cock's comb wears purple robes decorated with gold. On his shoulders sits a small pseudodragon. This image is modeled after D&D's image of Severin from the Tiamat campaign. A humanoid Owl drawn in pen and ink style who wields a cutlass in front of his face as he stands ready to duel a foe, wears a devilish mask over his eyes, and a robe over his shoulders. A psychotic small round birb boy who's feathers are black and white wears druid clothes, a tall pointy green hat with gold embroidery in the shape of a tree on it. Leaves and vines decorate seem to be growing out of his hat as well. He holds a staff with a skull on it and wields a sickle in his other hand. On his back can be seen a cross bow. A humanoid bird with extremely fancy neck wattle in bright red and blue holds a pointy mace in one hand and green sparky magic in the other. He is wearing intricate robes.

I've been really liking writing with fountain pens, but most of the notebooks I find don't have paper that loves fountain pens, so I've started making my own books with better paper.
A handbound book with a fancy gold and black cover. On top of the book rest a white mechanical pencil, a purple pilot fountain pend, and a brown Lamy fountain pen. The core of a handbound book, which is still in progress. The folios have been bound and sewn, and the mesh which will help hold the cover has been glued onto the paper. Next step is to make and attach the cover.

I don't have many flowers, so here is a quick character sketch I did for my kid's D&D bard.
An obviously raucous, big-mouthed bird bard singing a jaunty, discordant tune. A large daisy rests in his wide brimmed green hat. He strums a banjo while his giant yellow eyes look in different directions.

A wax museum display featuring Shirley Temple on a small boat titled "Good Ship Lollipop". It is festooned with hearts, cute animals, and topped with a some sort of sail next to an orange cartoon demon. I don't know. This was a wild time.

Every time I hear him speak, I think back to the large stones in Labyrinth who moaned about not going forward, telling the protagonist to turn back.
A scene from the movie Labyrinth: Somber faces rendered in stone line an underground corridor serving as false alarms and preventing progress. Utterly useless.
