This morning's #casein practice #painting was chosen by my kid who wanted something more complicated, so here it is! Finding the right dark colors without using black or getting too many whites in my darks took some discipline. I hope I got close, though I know there are things I'd fix.

Another morning #casein #painting practice. This time, Looking Away From a Lighthouse in Oregon. I've not really done water all that much, so this is something I should work at more often. I feel I could have added more color to this one.

A bit of ocean scenery. Grayish clouds above a grayish ocean. A circle created by the shoreline and some stones that rise above the water surround a central pillar. In the foreground grass complements the curve.
overall, this one feels a bit washed out, but it's practice.

Going through my photo roll of previous hikes to get some #casein #painting practice in while the weather isn't great and my time is short.

A chunky, boulder rests on a grass covered hill. There are small rocks to the left and a large mound on the right from which the boulder fell out of a long time ago. A small evergreen tree sits to the right of the boulder. In the distance there are trees and hill, and a river seems to carve its way through the landscape behind all of that. The front part of the scene is dark with shadow.

A large stump that suggests a rough hewn throne sits atop a small hill, surrounded by trees. everything is in shadow, except for the bright yellow green canopy of the trees in the upper half of the painting. A bright blue sky peaks through the canopy. I'm trying to get comfortable painting again but I'm still feeling very clumsy with my brush marks. Still, this is good practice.

I've been enjoying practicing #painting in #casein with a limited palette by doing 1 hour sketches in the morning before everyone wakes up. The brown paper I'm using pushes me toward an oil-like, opaque approach, but I'm going to keep trying transparent as well.

An evergreen tree, half-lit by the dawn reaches into a blue sky. part of a garage and very mangled car sit cloaked in shadow at the bottom of the painting.

Another tree, this time deciduous, reaches into the light blue sky, half-lit by the dawn sun and towering over the shadow-cloaked houses below.

I had a meeting today where my role was passive, so I spent the time doing a quick 20 minute study of a photo I took this morning on a walk. I'm still trying to get used to casein. It dries and changes color and value in ways I'm not able to predict yet.

A little artichoke doodle of some friends in the neighborhood who are no longer with us.

I just read Sun Flowers by @keezyyoung.bsky.social and found it lovely. Really pretty, interesting layout, touching story, cool paper!

I'm trying to learn how to use #casein so I'm doing little value studies. The thing that is killing me right now is how to blend gracefully between transparent and opaque use of the medium. It just dramatically shifts the hue and really dries way differently (darker/lighter) than it was when wet.

This dried much darker than expected. 7. a cliff lined seashore with waves crashing... meh . 8. An all too light rendering of a park originally painted by Monet. 9. A brightly lit lake and some low hills seen through a cover of trees and bushes.

Here are the only birds I've got. They were done up for a DnD campaign I ran my family through a few years ago. We played the whole Tyranny of Dragons campaign, but set in the world of Humblewood, so I had to recast all of the characters into animal people.

Leaves and vines decorate seem to be growing out of his hat as well. He holds a staff with a skull on it and wields a sickle in his other hand. On his back can be seen a cross bow.

I've been really liking writing with fountain pens, but most of the notebooks I find don't have paper that loves fountain pens, so I've started making my own books with better paper.
