🎃Happy Halloween!! 🎃

My part for the Fantoms of the Underground collab, hosted by some friends over on @districtmograph.bsky.social and @fantomcomics.bsky.social . It’ll even be screened in DC at Dupont Underground tonight with a bunch of other cool and spooky animations!

My good pal @ryanstorm.bsky.social launched a Kickstarter today to help produce his next short film, Penguin Midnight!

Here's a sneak peek at some of the backgrounds I've been working on over the past few months!

Dropping in to post the backgrounds I did for the latest episode of Bridge Kids! I think the team made a few more tweaks for the final versions used in the episode, but these were the base backgrounds I sent over.

I think that’s it for this episode's breakdown! Thanks for reading all this and a huge thanks to @speedoru.bsky.social and the team for having me on again and for putting such amazing animation on top of my backgrounds! ♥️

The stairs closeup was another unique shot. Lots of stuff in perspective but thankfully by this time I had accepted the fact that most of the wonkiness will be covered by all the people and of course, big Papa 👨

I could paint a variety of colors on the base of the crowd along with the shadows and then color-pick as I went to have some gradual shifts in the color and values of the little blob heads. You can see me experimenting a lot with them so each crowd is slightly different.

Also I’m lazy and wanted to paint as few individual people as possible lol. Over the course of these BGs, I developed a little blob brush that would randomize the color by like 2% or 3% per stroke. This gave it enough of a difference to add some depth without being distracting.

Speaking of the crowds, they were a fun challenge. I knew we wanted to keep the crowds pretty amorphous and not show too much detail or contrast. That way Speedo could draw any unique characters on top without the attention being pulled away.

I think I redrew these stairs like 3 or 4 times per BG trying to figure out what looked right. I used perspective rulers, math, and 3D models to try and figure them out. By the end of it I just used the crowd to hide as much of my mistakes as possible.

What I didn’t like was the amount of stairs this place had. Idk what it is about stairs in 3D space but my brain just can’t compute it. Something about how they move back, upwards and sometimes at an angle, plus each floor stepped back in space just broke my squishy little brain.

The majority of the BGs I did for Ep 3 were of the DWF ring and stands. Speedo provided the blueprints of the stadium and stage along with the DWF Logo when he sent over the layouts. I really appreciated the limited color palette here. It made the coloring process so much easier.

Once that looked good enough, I exported the render into Clip Studio and painted the finer details and cleaned some stuff up to make it look a little more hand-painted.
June 13, 2025 at 10:12 PM
The sky and background was a flat image I painted and placed behind the model. I then started modeling some of the smaller details and adding flat colors and figuring out the lighting of the scene.

I’ve got this crazy pipedream of moving my entire workflow into Blender and hand-painting my 2D BGs in 3D space, so this was another stab at getting closer to that goal. After I built a rough 3D model, I had Speedo-sama approve its layout before painting.
June 13, 2025 at 10:12 PM
The Ryougou Arena Exterior was the last background I painted for this episode. Partly because it was only needed for this one shot, but mostly because I wanted to experiment with how to build it. Here's the layout sketch Speedo sent me that I rebuilt in Blender.
June 13, 2025 at 10:12 PM
Also Idk why, but figuring out how the colors would look after the Emperor breaks through took a lot more trial and error than I expected. I guess I need to practice more interior lighting and color theory stuff!
June 13, 2025 at 10:12 PM
Interior perspective is still way harder for me compared to exteriors so the majority of my time was spent faffing about with the perspective ruler. Its always a balancing act of keeping things semi-realistic while not changing things too much that the characters no longer fit.
June 13, 2025 at 10:12 PM
Its that time again! Gonna post some of the BGs from the latest PPF episode along with some of my thoughts.

First up is Gogo’s apartment. Like previous episodes, @speedoru.bsky.social sent me the floor plan of the place along with his layout sketches for all the shots.

After a hectic day, Deacon Duck took the guys out for some delicious scoops of ice cream.

I tried to at least limit the drawing to 5 mins. The coloring and stuff took another 10 lol
