I haven't owned a licence in 3 years and not watched terrestrial TV in over 10 (refund? 😁) For me not needing a licence fee I have a Netflix, Amazon and Disney+ subs. Occasionally I throw Apple in. I have more choice for what I wish to watch and don't feel constrained by that which I do not.

I think you are spot on. I'd like to add that I think my tightening waist band is not due to middle body/ cosmic expansion but rather the shrinking effect of dark matter on my belt which, if I don't start eating more donuts, will clearly cause my midriff to crunch.
