I figure the best compromise would be to have a signal that ads are coming up and just let them roll for a few minutes, that way I can at least do something in the mean time and ignore the ads entirely

the main issue with mid-rolls is that they aren't long enough to allow you to do anything like take a piss or something, but they are entirely way too annoyingly long to sit through and let myself be bombarded with brain poison

Valve is definitely working towards that goal, but mostly just for their own ends.
The lack of support from proprietary devs and hardware drivers are still something they need to work around, some things are probably beyond them as well.

This fractured structure makes mass adoption to challenge the microsoft chokehold nearly impossible, due to a general lack of incentive for proprietary software and hardware developers to provide quality support of linux as an operating system.

While the kernel itself is solid due to being maintained centrally, most -if not all- linux software are designed by independent parties that lack the financial and technological facilities to be able to create truly end-user-friendly software that allows for a proper, modern OS with mass appeal.
