to be fair It could of course be argued that the entire game is kind of jokey, but the weird sincerity it constantly gives to its themes of existentialist transhumanism constantly have me feeling great about it all. It's probably going to inspire what I draw for a hot minute tbh

Right now my best example of it would be look outside, literally every character in the game has a unique and often indescribable design. But all of the recruitable characters are quite frankly the sorts of deranged concepts that I regularly make personally so they're a big stand out for me!

sadly the average rpg player only wants to play something if they can make a character that is just them but with cool sword powers, ooooor they want to stare at generic hot girls for their 80 hour rpg Un U

the problem most tabletop things run into in general is the sheer amount of races that are either just elves or functionally exotic cat girls 9u 9

Usually still interesting characters! But I'm out here celebrating things that cant even be remotely mistaken as human

I would say we need a dragon quest that has a bunch of cool playable monsters but that's already an entire franchise of dragon quest I guess

that game went hard on it and was probably the first game to make me look at every other rpg with far more scrutiny on playable characters

SURE all 40ish of them were functionally identical in most ways that matter but the effort was still cool!

oh gosh yeah BoF and suikoden have always been pretty good about making you feel like the world is HUGE just by having so many nonhuman characters

I especially love how all of the humans just look so wild that you still have to wonder if they're human at all too

I struggle to pick out a fav design in that game just from almost every character being an incredible concept, every new room is just "goddamn I wanna know everything about this new weirdo"

but yes I'm going to smooch audrey we're getting married
