Its National Latino AIDS Awareness Day. It’s a moment of reflection, when numbers of diagnosis continue to increase in our Latino community. The story by Dr. Roque Gardner reflects exactly how I feel and what I think needs to be done. @utswim.bsky.social @utswinfdis.bsky.social
Happy NLAAD! To celebrate, we've gathered personal stories detailing HIV perspectives from 2 individuals: a young, Latino male living with HIV and a Latina Infectious Diseases physician in Atlanta, Georgia. Read in MD Newsline:

Despite the availability of highly effect HIV prevention and treatment options, Hispanic/Latinx communities continue to be disproportionately impacted by HIV. Equity = access to prevention & care. Tell Congress to save lives by fully funding federal HIV programs! https://bit.ly/3HJljVt #NLAAD

This is so true. Thank you @idsainfo.bsky.social for highlighting this.
Less than 7% of all physicians in the U.S. are Latino, despite 19% of the population identifying as Latino. Having Latinos better represented in medicine is necessary for the Latino community and the future of medicine in the U.S.

We cannot do the complex and serious work of protecting Americans from infectious diseases amid this chaos and confusion.

I want to show my support and stand in solidarity with all the workers who lost their jobs and livelihoods today, especially those colleagues and friends who’ve worked so hard to keep the American people healthy. We’re in this together.

I get even more depressed when I check #idbluesky. We are all sad, angry, you name it. But we’re preaching to the choir here. We need to start thinking of what to do next.

Thank you for bringing this up.
I’m in the “latter” group of physicians trying to advocate for a safe, equitable and anti-discriminatory healthcare environment. Not without fear of consequences, and I’m not alone on this. We must try harder to practice medicine freely.

Texas Executive Order GA-46 and the Erosion of Trust in Health Care | NEJM
A new Texas policy could deter immigrants, both documented and undocumented, from seeking help for serious medical concerns. Consequences of this measure may reverberate widely.

In 2018 I made the conscious decision to become an advocate in the fight against #HIV. Never imagined the HIV community in Dallas County would end up voting for me for a Service Award for #worldAIDSday. It’s an honor and a privilege to fight with and care for so many unsung heroes.
We are so so so proud of our very own superstar, Dr. Susana Lazarte!!! Her untiring advocacy inspires us all to keep going!! #weareUTSWID #HIVSky @idmdsusana.bsky.social

So I have followed the #IDsocial crowd and now here! Hope this is it. Hope it’s not sold to mega donors who will use this for their political ambitions.
