For years I direct-sowed my lettuce straight into my raised beds but, in the last several years, they have been persistently nibbled (and often pulled out) by song birds. Now I grow them to a slightly larger size with my other early started seeds and plant them out when they have bulked up a bit.

Gah! I have three 90+ year old trees that all need serious work but are 30’ high and 30’ wide and I am so behind. 🤪
