four reads i loved in february 2025 #BookSky #CadeReads
Fullmetal Alchemist Fullmetal Edition Cover of Volume 4, by Hiromu Arakawa. A woman with spiky blonde hair is reloading a rifle. There is bright yellow text showing the name and author of the manga, plus some alchemical symbols I believe are unique to the story. I'm rereading this series after only ever having seen some of the first anime series. Four point seven five out of five stars. This volume knocked it out of the park with fleshing out some of the backstory. Cover of If Flowers Were Little Monsters by Claire Le Men, translated by Jeffrey K. Butt. Mostly turquoise background with a cluster of flowers and flower monsters in the center with the title in big white letters over the cluster. The author and translator are listed above this cluster and "A Field Guide to Fact and Fantasy" is printed beneath. Let me share my little review in entirety from Storygraph: This is the coolest most awesome book to ever. Learn a little flower history, get to see adorable and interesting monster versions of those flowers. I love that the author also encourages you to make your own. Superb little meditation of a book that makes you appreciate nature and all its wild beautiful forms. Five star read. The Maid by Nita Prose. The cover is a lighter red with the central focus being a black keyhole that shows a leg in a maid's outfit of grey dress with apron and grey heel exiting (maybe hastily) to the left. This was a read well out of my usual. A coworker recommended. I enjoyed it. A mix of Only Murders in the Building and Clue. Although I don't think I liked all the ways main character Molly's neurodivergence was portrayed, the last 50 pages had me seated, and I related to both some of her intrusive thoughts and how she gave second chances to certain people. The cover of Scythe and Sparrow by Brynne Weaver. The background is black and there is a red banner with white text that shares the title. At the top of the cover are the words "The Ruinous Love Trilogy". In yellow gold and reddish yellow simple pictures are various silhouettes of important pieces of the story: a circus tent, a motorcycle, crutches, birds, skulls, tarot cards, a scalpel, bones, etc. I loved the first book in this trilogy (and would love to talk to anyone about it) and I quite enjoyed this one, although it's just not as strong a story. But I highly recommend the audiobook dual POV narrations of this series. Superb! I love when the other person's dialogue is read by that character, instead of one person trying to hit all the voices. A fun, weird, dark romance that plays into the unhinged horror vibes so well.

A lone figure in a spacesuit free floats above a planet. A fun sci-fi romp. I'm looking forward to the movie adaptation by Bong Joon-ho. Prunella and the Cursed Skull Ring, cover of a graphic novel by Matthew Loux. A young skeleton girl, wearing a blue dress, green striped tights, and red boots, with a fluffy mass of orange hair and wearing a red bow, stands in a village clearing. The street is populated with a variety of monsters, and glowing lanterns float near the tops of the nearby buildings. The skeleton girl has a delighted expression as she views her surroundings. Lovely supernatural journey to affirming one's found family. Cover of The Wild Robot, book by Peter Brown. A robot made of simple but effective shapes stands alone atop a jumble of round rocks above wavy water lines. A forest of trees, some triangular, others showing the outline of branches all the way down, rises up behind the robot, and a red sun radiates in the top right corner of the cover. The movie made me cry and the book made me cry. I'm so happy to have both. The audiobook is also amazing. Five star read.
