I feel like 3 SMRs are not enough.

The more interesting question is how long it takes for the 'marginal gas pricing is the cause of all our cost problems' narrative to die out within OFGEM/DESNZ/etc (-for clarity's sake I am not denying the gas price caused the 2022/23 crisis or that it can't be expensive in the future)

The fact that there is a 'buget' - calculated as the expected payments per year (above the wholesale electricity market price - set by gas) means anyone claiming that offshore wind saves money is a barefaced liar. AR7 should not go ahead if they are serious about 'Cheap power'.

It is not the role of government to socially engineer what people do with their gardens.

I don't think an exponential curve is the best fit here

I see your point on how scrapping it would be interpreted but the new fractured consensus puts real pressure on renewable advocates to get costs under control.

We all see the costs coming April. If Miliband can’t scrap RO, he could aggressively ratchet it down to match network/RAB increases.

For ROs, I don't see why Miliband couldn't using his powers as DESNZ secretary to set the required % obligation of supply to 0% for 2025-2026 or set the buy out price to £0.

Scrapping the UK ETS (on gas) would counter intuitively benefit UK wholesale elec prices.

Exports would be reduced, meaning inter-connector flow would increase towards the UK, and all else being equal lower marginal prices.

A quick reading of this OFGEM doc places the cost of the RO scheme at £6.7 billion in 2023-2024.

It would be pretty easy for OFGEM to set the Renewables Obligation to 0% of supply or set the buy-out price to 0 for 2025-2026 onwards.

Miliband could do this with his DESNZ Secretary of State powers. No legislation is needed.

High energy prices are more important than RO generators.

That gas is via the balancing mechanism. Its not setting the wholesale price. @stockfttp.bsky.social

When you are polling on 16% its over.

There can be no promises of future government roles, no future leverage. And they don’t have any plans for reform, or the brainpower to come up with something that could pay off after a few years.

Congratulations!

I'm glad the labour party worked on a deal that will lower fuel costs for everyone with cheaper bioethanol at the cost of concentrated benefits for a few companies.

Any comment on the horrendous AR7 offshore wind price?
July 23, 2025 at 7:17 PM
If energy advocates such as yourself stopped pedalling the lie that gas at ~80p/therm (£27.30 MWh) is driving high energy bills we wouldn't find ourselves in this situation.
