True, but unfettered free markets is the maximalist position in capitalism. Worker control of capital is the starting point in socialism. There exist socialist possibilities to the left of that. They just are never discussed or taught in the United States.

A New Deal capitalist is still a capitalist. That's the gist here. Today it's everyone's habit to abuse the term "socialism" and stretch it to cover almost any government initiative. But until we're nationalizing banks, we're not really doing socialism.

That wasn't socialism. Debs was socialist, calling for worker control of capital. The New Deal was meant to preserve capitalism -- we once called it welfare state capitalism, which was widely accepted until R's turned "welfare" into a smear word

Honestly... I wish that New Deal Democrats would quit calling themselves socialist. They're not -- I don't know a single one calling to end private banking (worker control of capital requires this). R's screech like it's Eugene Debs coming to power. It's nothing of that sort.

Today, Republicans in Congress flashed their willingness to vote against Trump to further their self-preservation. If they aren't planning a graceful exit already ("we will put you on the dollar bill if you step aside now, otherwise it's the 25th"), I'd be shocked. Weakness at the top can't last.

I don't think it's happening now. But if Trump is still an albatross around their necks in the spring, and they can send him out as a hero diminished by age...
