Directed tariffs have a purpose in the Global marketplace, so nations tend to be protective of their main industry. America's USED to be the Auto industry, so for instance Biden kept Trump tariffs on China's SUV's. Ours couldn't compete on price. But broad tariffs only serve to sew distrust
