Why are numbers rising?

—> More aggression in society overall (political climate worse)
—> Post-pandemic visitor rules looser, increasing risks
—> Attacks are still underreported: most don’t report verbal abuse
—> Laws exist but aren’t always enforced (no federal law: some states do have laws)

Many who should not own firearms are able to do so & fewer consequences if they are used.

—> More weapons in hospitals—many don’t have metal detectors
—> Healthcare violence is still normalized: “just part of the job”
—> Even when laws exist, hospitals rarely press charges
