We are calling on the Government to conduct a new and fully transparent process to appoint a Commissioner to the DPC with a proven capacity and record of protecting rights and fundamental freedoms, and data protection in particular.

The credibility of the EU’s digital rulebook depends on strong, impartial and elective supervisory authorities. The selection process for such a critical position must reflect the independence and expertise necessary to restore trust in the DPC.

There are long-standing and ongoing concerns regarding the DPC's willingness to enforce GDPR, and patterns of delayed or limited enforcement continue to undermine trust in the regulator at a time when even greater assurances of independence are needed.

The appointment of a former Meta lobbyist as third Commissioner of the DPC reflects a concerning level of disregard for EU Law and for the government’s legal obligations to ensure independent, impartial, and elective implementation of GDPR.
