At thirteen years old, while crying in my mom’s Volvo in the middle school parking lot my mom finally explained periods and puberty to me.

After that, I had to secretly check out books from the library because that was the first and last conversation we had on the topic until I was sixteen.

At the emergency room they performed a transvaginal ultrasound. Couldn’t find anything wrong.

“You’re just having a bad period, but follow up with your dr if you want.”

After sitting in an hours-long meeting I stood up to leave and felt a gush of hot, sticky blood. I had a Mirena, I wasn’t expecting my (usually light since mirena) period. Something didn’t feel right.
