As articles in our SI 'Getting Critical About Critique' emerge in the journal Teaching in Higher Education (look out for them!), here is the article that inspired the SI. It features provocations from scholars on the meanings of 'critique':

Jingzihua (经字画; scriptural painting) is a visual celebration of Chinese artistry and Islamic scripture. A synthesis of Quranic verses depicted through Chinese aesthetics, sometimes even centred on key Chinese characters like 孝 (xiào; filial piety) or 静 (jìng; quiet)

Master Zhao Yu Fang [赵玉芳], based in Linxia, specialises in this unique art form. A friend of the project, he shared with us that, when he first started, traditional Sini calligraphers disapproved of his use of colours and his departure from the naked text.

Like Sini calligraphy, jīng zìhuà integrates Quranic scripture into traditional Chinese arts, including floral arrangements & ornamental vases. The Quranic script is sometimes difficult to discern & is woven into the swirling patterns of leaves and petals via calligraphic strokes

Since I’m going through some pics for my forthcoming book on heritage literacy , I thought I’d do a thread on what I consider a sub-genre of Sini calligraphy: jīng zìhuà (经字画; scriptural painting). To me, it is another kind of Sino-Muslim ‘confluence’ of traditions and heritage literacy in the study

Calligraphy of 'Love Without Boundaries' [اَلْحُبُّ بِلَا حُدُوْد], and Allāhu-akbar [God is greater than -] forming a symmetrical circular pattern like petals of a flower.

1) Calligraphy of the plea “Intercede for us on the Day of Judgement, Oh Muhammad ﷺ”. Bold Sini-Arabic calligraphy in a curvilinear design.
2) The Arabic phrase “Subhanallah” (‘Glory be to Allāh’/ Allāh is perfection) with traditional Chinese shanshui [山水] landscape elements.

The ‘Basmala’ in gongbi hua (工笔画) style. "In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful" is complemented by magnolia blossoms. A blend of Islamic calligraphy and Chinese aesthetics.
