Fitting headline. I can’t tell you the number of times Howard alumni, students, and new colleagues welcomed me home since we announced in January I was coming to the Mecca. 🙏🏾

I joined the HU faculty a few days ago. Honored to be featured in Diverse’s HBCU issue.

Delighted to share that MALCOLM LIVES! received its third and fourth starred reviews. My editor told me it is rare for a book to receive four starred reviews. So feeling grateful for the readers and reviewers at Booklist and School Library Journal. ✨✨✨✨

Ayman Odeh is a member of the Knesset, Israel’s parliament. He leads the Arab-Jewish Hadash party and often quotes MLK Jr. Odeh was forcefully removed from the podium in Israeli’s parliament when he criticised Israel’s war on Gaza and the rising deaths of Palestinians.

While Ono has been a president for the 13 years, Johnson is a lobbyist who serves the GOP on boards. With no experience working in higher ed or presiding over any institution, she wants a salary nearly double that of the last president.

FAMU Foundation Board meets today @ 2 to discuss her package.

When I was writing Malcolm Lives, I imagined reading it as a youngster. How it would have empowered me. These days, I am brought to a smile when I imagine all the young (and adult) readers it is empowering. Malcolm Lives! is a NYT Best Seller for the second week!

Police officers are killing more Americans than then they did five years ago when they killed George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. Too many people have been deluded into believing the problem is the problem solvers, the perpetrators are the victims, and the treatment is the disease.

The Malcolm Lives! tour ended. Here’s some images from the events after Milwaukee. Almost all of which sold out! Where I met so many adults and young people striving to learn about Malcolm X, or looking to be inspired by Malcolm’s revolutionary boldness and courage. We had a time!

When powerful forces are attempting to stop young people from learning about Black history, Islam, racism, antiracist activism, courage, and revolutionaries. But Malcolm Lives! made this list despite it all. Because there’s nothing more powerful than you, the readers. 🙏🏾

If someone would have told me an unapologetically candid biography of a Malcolm X would debut at #3 on the New York Times bestseller list, then I wouldn’t believe them. Not during this time.

Malcolm lives on Malcolm X Day, his 100th birthday. It is a day to celebrate this Muslim minister, learn his life story, be inspired by his unbreakable commitment to liberate Black people from racism, build solidarity among subjected peoples to revolutionize the world, and enshrine our human rights.

The farmhouse no longer exists. There is a historical marker I reference in the introduction of Malcolm Lives! The marker states the boy “became renowned as an articulate spokesperson for human rights.” After describing Malcolm’s death, the marker states, “His teaching lives on.”

The Klansmen broke the windows of the farmhouse but didn’t break Louise or Earl. They were not about to submit or accommodate. A radical defiance they infused into their children, into Malcolm, before they were both snatched out of his life in the 1930s.
May 19, 2025 at 1:35 PM
Meanwhile, Klansmen roamed free, marching by the tens of thousands in Washington, DC, weeks after Malcolm’s birth. Weeks before Malcolm’s birth, Klansmen came with guns and torches at night to terrorize the Little family. A pregnant Louis came outside. Faced down the Klansmen with Earl out of town.

In 1925, the very year Malcolm came into the world on May 19, the Feds imprisoned Garvey. Soon, the Feds had the Jamaica-born Garvey trafficked out of the U.S., a political tool still used today.

Earl and Louis Little lived in North Omaha, Nebraska where they had organized a chapter of Marcus Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association. Garvey sought to unite and empower Black people worldwide. (A few days ago, Omaha elected its first Black mayor.)

On this day, 100 years ago, Louis and Earl Little Sr. gave birth to a boy they named Malcolm Little, later to be renamed Malcolm X, and ultimately El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz.

Our experience together in Montclair Tuesday night was special. Young people stood up in front of a large crowd and shared their thoughts. One said he didn’t read biographies, but Malcolm Lives got his attention. And thank you to our moderators Nyzia Newman and Tabitha St Bernard.

It was invigorating last night to speak about Malcolm Lives at the Strand, a bookstore born two years after Malcolm and with Elinor Tatum, who edits the Amsterdam News that birthed Malcolm’s public life in 1957. Sitting in gratitude for all who came, snatching up all the copies of Malcolm Lives!
