A big shout-out to IBiS grad student Tim Kim (Mirkin Lab) who was named a 2025 Ryan Fellow! He also has a co-first author paper now out in JACS. Cheers to both achievements!

Dr. Omar Payán Parra, an IBiS student who graduated last Spring from the Yang Lab, just published a first-author paper in Epigenetics and Chromatin. Congrats!

We held our 2025 IBiS Retreat at Lake Lawn Resort last week for 2 days of science discussion, knowledge exchange, and fun!

Our amazing alum Dr. Luyi Cheng visited IBiS to give a BioProfessionals seminar about potential careers in science policy, followed by a Lunch and Learn event where grad students got to ask in-depth questions about Luyi’s career path and job knowledge. A lovely time was had by all! Thank you, Luyi!

A big congratulations to our amazing Eduardo Campos Chávez (Mondragón Lab), who was awarded the 2025 Presidential Fellowship from Northwestern’s Graduate School. This is the most prestigious fellowship awarded to graduate students at NU, and is a huge honor! We are so proud of you!

It has been a busy time for IBiS! With the Lane-Petersen Happy Hour on the 11th, a CV/Resume workshop from Dr. Aubrey Korenta of the Career Center last Tuesday, and DRiLS Speaker Dr. Markita Landry visiting us last Thursday, we’ve had lots of learning, fun, and community building!

The Pinkett Lab recently published a review article: "Structurally diverse C-terminal accessory domains in type I ABC importers reveal distinct regulatory mechanisms." Congrats to Tiffany Ge and the Brickner Lab for their pub in Molecular Cell! The paper describes a second function for Exportin-1 in serving as an adaptor for transcription factor-mediated tethering of genes to the nuclear pore complex. The paper is now online: doi.org/10.1016/j.mo...

IBiS and MBS had a sweet Valentine’s Day Happy Hour Friday to spread the love! Featuring bouquet making and candy grams (with all proceeds going to charity), chocolate tasting, and a pink sparkly drink, a good time was had by all. Thanks to grads Olivia and Katy for putting everything together!
