i've long been kinda on the fence about kyoani's arawi adaptations--i've found their love for naturalism kinda at odds with arawi's surrealism and hilariously UN-natural pacing and emphasis, and both kinda cancelling each other out in the process--but not anymore!

the trick of course is that it's quickly established as inconceivable that the tiny, gentle, and/or adorably ineffectual characters in this show could ever do any harm to each other, in spite of their most diligent efforts

the anime "risky/safety" (1999-2000) displays a working prototype of the kyoani ideal of therapeutic moe, despite it opening on a scene of a shinigami appearing before a despondent young lady and declaring her intent to send the latter to hell.

when osamu tezuka saw the daicon iii animation, he famously said "there certainly were a lot of characters in the film...there were also some that weren't in the film." akai and yamaga, realizing the implication of tezuka's remark, made sure that daicon iv did not omit muttley.

we think we'll get a momentary reprieve from all the violence--no such luck, with a one-frame puppy jump scare. i like how the music cue isn't even given time to finish

brilliant scene from chuck jones's "two's a crowd" that conveys the extent of the director's funny cynicism--claude cat's acting is entirely convincing and observant of heartwarming interactions with cute puppies, while in fact only murder is on his mind!
