Supporting People and National Projects: Creative Industries Coalition comments on Budget 2025 Toronto, November 5, 2025 The Creative Industries Coalition will continue to advocate for support to creative working people and new jobs in the creative industries sector in the future. Our national coalition has been advocating for a Live Performing Arts Tax Credit to incentivize private sector investments in nation-building projects celebrating our stories and music, developing new talent, protecting and enhancing our national and regional cultural sovereignty – all at a time when Canada is at risk. The Creative Industries Coalition is a broad national collective of unions, industry associations, venue owners and operators as well as producers that have been advocating for several years to replicate the success of the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit by introducing a similar labour-based tax credit to spur private sector investment in communities across Canada in every region of Canada’s Live Performing Arts Sector. Last week The Canadian Chamber of Commerce released “Artworks – The Economic and Social Dividends from Canada’s Arts and Culture Sector” highlighting the significant economic footprint of the arts and culture sector. Key findings include: 1. Arts and Culture Sector contributed more than $65 Billion to direct GDP in Canada in 2024 2. The total economic impact of the Sector is over $100 Billion in GDP 3. The Sector supports more jobs per dollar than other keys sector such oil and gas, manufacturing or agriculture 4. The sector generates an estimated $17 Billion in federal and provincial tax revenue. 5. The sector generates $29 in economic activity for every dollar in federal investment. Full letter on IATSE.net

On Oct. 28, IATSE took part in a Lobby Day on Parliament Hill, advocating for a federal tax credit for live performing arts.

IATSE VP John Lewis joined affiliates of the Canadian Labour Congress in a meeting with Minister of AI and Digital Innovation Evan Solomon. Together, they discussed how labour can collaborate with the Federal Government as it works to promote and regulate the ethical use of Generative AI.

SYNDICAT FORT - Les employé-es de Sunbelt Film and Television Rentals au Canada obtiennent leur première convention collective Les employé-es de Sunbelt Film and Television Rentals au Canada obtiennent leur première convention collective TORONTO, ON — Près de deux ans après leur accréditation, les employé-es de Sunbelt Film and Television Rentals à Toronto, anciennement William F. White International, ont ratifié leur première convention collective avec l'Alliance Internationale des Employés de Scène, de Théâtre et de Cinéma (AIEST). Cette convention couvre les travailleurs et travailleuses d'une entreprise de location de matériel cinématographique et télévisuel et est la seule convention collective de ce type au Canada. Sur les quatre-vingt-dix-neuf membres éligibles de l'unité de négociation, quatre-vingt-dix-sept ont voté. La grande majorité a voté en faveur de la ratification. Le syndicat des travailleurs et travailleuses a été en mesure d'atteindre un grand nombre des priorités de l'unité dans cette première entente, y compris des augmentations de salaire de 12 % sur une période de trois ans, qui comprennent des augmentations rétroactives jusqu'en juin 2024 ainsi qu'une prime de signature substantielle pour tous les employé-es. "Il y a eu des moments, au cours de cette longue négociation, où l'on a eu l'impression que nous n'arriverions jamais à ce moment. White International, have ratified their first collective agreement with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). This agreement covers workers at a film and television equipment supply company and is the only collective agreement of its kind in Canada. Of the ninety-nine eligible members in the bargaining unit, ninety-seven cast ballots. The vast majority voted in favor of ratification. The workers’ union was able to achieve many of the unit’s priorities in this first agreement, including including wage increases of 12 % over the three-year term, which include retroactive increases back to June 2024 as well as a substantial signing bonus for all employees. “There were times during this long, drawn-out negotiation where it felt like we may never get to this moment. It was the determination of our bargaining committee, and the patience and support of the Sunbelt employees throughout the process, that got us to the finish line,” said Monty Montgomerie, IATSE International Representative and bargaining committee member. “The turnout for the ratification vote and the overwhelming support for the collective agreement is nothing short of spectacular,” said John Lewis, IATSE International Vice President and Director of Canadian Affairs. This ratification is part of a growing wave of unionization in the entertainment industry across the United States and Canada.
