And obviously, this is totally within Lego's legal ability to do so. But it certainly feels weird, especially since they haven't done anything with the I.P. in so long. Considering the question, I felt like I'd bring it up.

About a week ago, when they were getting ready to drop a Demo, Lego sent them a cease and desist, effectively forcing them to cancel the game. It felt like such a weird heel-turn, after 8 years of work. But apparently the finished product looked too "official".

For the last 8 years, there was a group of fans called Team Kanohi who were working on a fan created Bionicle game. According to them, they had been in touch with Lego to make sure everything was okay. They were planning on releasing the game for free when they were finished.

I have an interesting case that seems related. So, I've been a big Bionicle fan for most of my life, and there was a group. The line is now defunct, and has been for almost a decade now, outside of a single promo set Lego made when they celebrated their 90th anniversary.
