Greenland is covered by NATO and therefore, this is not required. Any encroachment by Russia or China would trigger NATO retaliation so this would never happen.

Looking at the flight information, it looks like this person was performing some illegal moves over the reservoir about an hour before the crash, not normal so I suspect pilot error.
