In 1835 a young lawyer wrote an essay defending Deism and Thomas Paine, and criticizing Christianity. His name was Abraham Lincoln. The essay disappeared. The story is that Samuel Hill, a friend and ally, burned it, thus saving Lincoln’s political career.
