We totally need to chase them! Also @jencross.bsky.social how did I totally miss you at BugShot?!? I didn't even know you were there! I'm bummed because you're one of my favorite photographers I follow here! And a rare bugshotter that shoots other wildlife! Next time we'll have to shoot together!

Jeff Lockwood's excellent book Locust talks a fair bit about pioneering entomologists like C. V. Riley and the establishment of pest management programs (and the appropriation of funding) within the US Dept. of Agriculture, etc. Has some actual breakdowns of funding numbers.

The front of the lens was nearly at the minimum focus distance here - probably less than 2 inches! I only got bit once :)

Didn't have a flight set up then though. We look to have a few wild species here in so cal and I can ask some UCR ent folks if anyone has a colony. John Abbott might well have Gryllus in flight though! Or if you're up for mailing me some live ones?!

Ooooh cool!! Okay, I can try to work on that! I regularly purchase Acheta but have never tried getting those in flight (not sure how readily they fly anyway - especially reared ones). We had lots of mass emergences of G. texensis when I was in Austin and they flew a bit more readily...

This is awesome! Are you selling these or selling the plans?
