Not a movie, but a BBC radio series brilliantly begins with the creators of an unsolved mysteries podcast being drawn into deepening, but ambiguous, paranormal territory, via The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. Cf Wikipedia, "The Lovecraft Investigations". Strongly recommended.
