Years ago, I heard about a tunnel under Mt. San Jacinto that brought water to Southern California, and I was intrigued. I finally had an opportunity to see this tunnel. I wrote about its history and how this feat of engineering and grit makes life as we know it in Southern California possible.

Crews have nearly finished dismantling the last of four dams on the Klamath River. In mid-August, I saw excavators carving away at remnants of two dams — Iron Gate and Copco No. 1. Soon workers will clear channels, reestablishing a free-flowing stretch of the river.
