Some good news! Clean energy and transportation investment in the US continued really strong growth in the third quarter this year, hitting a new record high of $71 billion!

The report highlights some discrepancies that at least track with my perceptions of social media pundits: in general they're more conservative, they're on The Bad Place, and they're monetized in some way or another.

A lot of this funding is piling up in sectors that are already facing overcapacity issues. The new three (EVs, batteries, and solar) are standouts in receiving growing grants, which help power growing capacity.

Bank credit is also doubling down on legacy industries and state-owned giants. Total funding is growing, but banks are piling in on "safe" returns from state-owned (and implicitly state-guaranteed) firms.

If you look at grants, the largest recipients are getting a growing amount of grants, but smaller firms are getting less. Strategic sectors (with exceptions like batteries and autos) also don't get more grants than non-strategic sectors. Struggling SOEs also get a larger share of grants.

I wasn't familiar with MacWeeney, but these just sent me on a run through his whole website archive there. Some really phenomenal time capsules of Ireland.

Particularly liked this one, has a ghostly feel:

Definitely a sign of nationalization of news, but the NYT's staff as a percentage is probably padded out pretty significantly by the fact that the total pool of newspaper employees has cratered.

Time for frost and grey days now.

Somebody tagged the EPA's sign on the corner of 14th and Constitution and I happened to snap this right as somebody went by on a scooter.
