Cotswold runner, occasional bicyclist & full-time grandaddy.

I Like a good story.

I’m learning to row, albeit indoors, on a machine. There’s more technique to it than learning how to run so I’m not yet a rower. But I remember when I was not yet a runner.
What a difference a day makes
24 little hours
Brought the 🌞 and the 🌹🌹
Where there used to be ☔️

I oughtn’t to run 2 days running on my legs but what the heck.

Went off-piste at Westonbirt Arboretum though superb waymarked run routes there. Go at opening to avoid the crowds.

Drip, drip, drop, little April showers…ha,ha, ya missed me! But twas close. 😜

Accompanied by @therestpolitics.bsky.social podcast: what is Kemi Badenoch selling us? 🤷‍♂️

…followed by a bit of Jazz.

Nice.

Couple of e-bikers kept ahead; good on hills, not so quick on the levels. 🤷

4th time #ergdata hasn’t saved my 30 mins #rowalong data.

After I finish, I go to the menu & select “exit & save” but it takes me right back to the workouts menu; no save; nothing new in the logbook.

Wondering if #exr is a worthy alternative; the thing being it wants payments. 🤨

My latest favourite route which I describe as “mixed terrain”, it goes: road; trail; field; road; trail; field; woods; trail; road; field; & road. To say nothing of the hills! Trail shoes for this one.

Regained 1 of the 2 VO2max points lost through my Garmin HR monitor error 2 runs ago. 👍

Here’s an odd little thing I just remembered from when I started #running.

Hydration/dehydration: I wanted to see how much water I lost on a run. Just roughly.

I got into my kit & went on the bathroom scales, noted the weight.

Then I did an easy 10k.

Weighed myself after.

I was 900g lighter. 😜

#Garmin optic HRM seemed to behave itself today; no “cadence lock”, all pulse relative.

I don’t know about others but on #Strava I’m keen to see my 400m time in “Segments: Best Efforts”. I like to go full out at the finish, even on easy runs.

It’s allowed, coach says so. 😏

A tense moment as I completed my 7k real-time rowalong on #ergdata & reached for the “save & exit loop”. Would it fail to do that for the 3rd time?

It saved & it was a good to see the drop out & spinning wheel.

Saw a lag on visuals vs data - understandable - but it’s fun rowing this way. #concept2

Every so often my #Garmin jumps the shark. From the off it put me quickly into zone5, ridiculous as wasn’t feeling it at all. It went up to 5.9; so where’s it gonna go next? There isn’t a zone 6 😜

Stopped, took my pulse = 120ish.

Days like this, I think they’re just expensive toys. 🤨

#ergdata again not saving after exiting the #concept2 rowalong workout. Sheesh! 🙄

Deleted & reinstalled the app to see if it makes a difference - though I had the latest version at the time.

“if it ain’t on #Strava, it didn’t happen.”

Yes but at least the body knows it did.

That’s twice this month the #ergdata app ditched me on completion of my “real-time rowalong”!

Is it me?

I finished rowing after a decent 30ish minutes, pulled down the short menu & selected exit & save - just showed me the workouts home page again, no save! 😠

What we talk about when we talk about #running:

Grandson, 9yo, visited with football. To the park! I don’t play footie but consistent running meant I chased the ball around no probs!

Old run shoes are painful for footie. Ouch!

Right quad now feels like it’s been hit by a sledgehammer!

From indoors, it looks a brilliant day! And it is apart from a chill wind. Had the foresight to nip back for a hoodie.

That wind for the last 2k was a headwind, like pushing through treacle. Don’t mind any hills but spare me the headwind!

VO2max estimate picked up a bit. Nice.

This went better than expected:

I swear 93% of niggles come
from non-running events; like digging holes, moving furniture or getting things from the loft.

The knee was complaining about something but after 250m it went quiet. “Listen to your body!” - OK but I could use an interpreter. 🤔

I knew it was coming but it still took me by surprise: forecast said 16°C; car dash said 21°C.

It’ll help when our clocks spring forwards 1 hour from solar-time, then I’ll be running earlier 🤔
Well, maybe get up earlier, eat earlier & to bed earlier.

Yeah, won’t happen. 😜

I think I must be some kind of social media numpty. Someone explain tags to me.

How does the post below fall under #running ?

Yes, I’ve worked out it’s likely to do with bm100, but what is making that connection?

Hard to believe last week we were sat in a pub garden at lunchtime drinking chilled cider.

A chilly run today with a biting wind where there was no hedgerow to shield the road from the open fields. Thankful for tights & gloves again.

Thursday looks more promising though 🌞

We should play around with the machine; no one-size-fits-all.

But for me, I find what worked for a consistent #Zone2 for >30mins:

Drag factor: 130
Stroke rate: 29
Pace: 2:20/500m
if HR rises, correct my form - legs>hips>arms>
arms>hips>legs.
Reach for the “catch”.

Went to the gym following a pub Sunday roast.

I don’t know if it was the fuel, the different time of day or that I rowed deliberately at a lesser stroke rate but I found it easier to keep HR all in Zone 2 for >30 mins, unlike previous fails.

Distance was the same.

I enjoy almost everything about running, but I don’t really follow it much as a sport.

Didn’t know about this Masters (previously Veterans) Athletics Games business. Assuming it’s not like an ordinary organised event, how do you enter or get selected?

(asking for a friend) 😏

A resistance workout & #zone2 #indoorrowing this morning. I fear I’m picking up a cold with all the fluctuating change in our weather (UK), so I drifted above zone 2 a bit - fatigue.

The rowalong visual is basic but I notice rowers pull alongside & then row away. Friendly!
Or provocative?

Picked up a Local Legend thingy on this one; just means I need a new route. 😝

Had a busy day yesterday - strength work, indoor rowing & a dog walk to the pub - & so the HR was high too though I could still talk whole sentences.

Still, no drop in the VO2max estimate so we keep moving on.

Passed 2 unknown runners today. 👍

In the suburbs, I’d get blanked by most runners but now out in the sticks, it’s more unusual so we grin & say hi! 😁

But I want to do more, stop & chat, ask them where they’ve run from, are they on Strava & can I see their routes?

But I just say Hi! 😄

I can’t find where now but someone had asked us for good strength building exercises routines for runners.

Maybe I meant to post my bit but was distracted - it happens.

Anyhoo, this showed up on the Faceplace & it’s more or less what I did or do.

Side effects of #running.

Saw today, the term “training bradycardia”.

Two years ago was in A&E. Triage nurse taking BP asks if I’m “spotty”.

“I don’t think I am, should I look?”

Oh, sporty! 😂

Later Nurse 2: How long have I been braddy?

Me: 😳

She turns to Nurse 3: he doesn’t know “braddy”.

A good day for a run though a bit mucky across the fields. 6°C, feels like 5°C according to the BBC; but for runners, may feel warmer 😝 .

Unusually busy down the narrow lanes - I mean >6 cars! I step off for cars passing behind but those coming towards can stop! They never do.
