Sounds like you've done the right thing, Jon. Is there plenty of fine sand/soil somewhere near it that the bees can use to fill up the holes, once they've laid their eggs in there?

I made a bee hotel a few years ago & put it up on one of our garden walls. I didn't ever see much activity in it, so this year I repositioned it higher up on another wall. I have now seen several bees going in and out. Maybe you could try moving yours to a different location?

We’ve got some buddleia bushes at the back of our garden that tend to attract the butterflies to the area, but we get a lot more bees than butterflies. We have had painted ladies, but I haven’t seen any recently.
