Anti-austerity, anti-fascist. Mostly social science. Send me data.
@adamtooze.bsky.social Is this data relevant in 2025? In Crashed, you wrote that "the central axis of world finance was not Asian-American but Euro-American." Can we still claim anything similar?

However much certain commentators want to bury Europe, in 2007, "the central axis of world finance was not Asian American but Euro-American." It may have changed. Prove it to me.

Quote & graphic from Adam Tooze, Crashed, 2018.

Anyone else getting Orwellian vibes here?

Yeah, that looks like an interesting little rabbit-hole.

Quite liked this cartoon aphorism I discovered. "Learning is a pain in the arse, am I right?"

Rebuilding public capacity is a cause I could really get behind. The state has been so debilitated by 40 yrs of denying its own capacity, we've forgotten how to create, organise & use that potential.

(BTW Marianna Mazzucato helps us remember how it's done)

Welfare recipients pass their money immediately back into the real economy. Wall Streeters, on the other hand, extract money from the real economy & circulate it instead within an unproductive circle-jerk we call the financial system.

Who are the parasites?

Good book.

This is worth a read too. It's nice & to the point. A big takeaway from both books is that building more houses won't work, no matter how many pundits line up to say it will. Even building more council houses won't work. Deeper reforms are needed too - on right to buy, on 2nd homes, on holiday lets

Notice that #austerity has become a matter of degree now, not kind. Time was, austerity = cuts. Now, according to Reeves, austerity = cuts-that-I-say-are-big-enough-to-count.

I'm calling this out. It's BS. If govt is cutting, they're doing austerity.

Followers like this...

What is going on with this nonsense? 1 post, but it's claiming to be a news source? The claim to be pro-democracy looks downright creepy when put alongside the lurking suspicion that I'm being grifted by a bot.

Beautiful and famous cover. Hard to find at an affordable price. Like this beauty I recently landed - and my wallet still hurts.

EVERY economy is planned.

When 'free market' politicians say their economy won't be planned, it means they're contracting the job out. To parasites/financiers.

Take it up with Michael Hudson if you don't believe me.

My political sympathies go a bit haywire looking at these. Nothing I hate more than #austerity, but damn if the planet couldn't use that population dip.

#saynotonuclearwar for all our sakes. The clock is ticking & the stakes are getting high, folks.
