You get a different view on these splits if you accept that the interesting block is the Reform/Green total, which arguably represents the "this is all terrible and we need a radical change even if none of the sums add up" vote.

I do agree that there are workable solutions like this and that this kind of reform is badly needed, but if a perfectly sensible amendment on social care got killed by the Daily Mail Death Tax campaign, I can only imagine the fun they'll have with "Now Starmer wants your home" and "veggie tax"

Entirely agree, but the problem the politicians have is that many of the simplifications that make sense in theory are entirely unsellable in practice. Consider the biggest carve-outs - no capital gains tax on primary residences, VAT on food etc.

And secondly, I chair elibrariesforschools.org which is a charity dedicated to making the argument that digital technology offers a cost-effective way to promote reading and close the education attainment gap - we have a 'national digital library' policy paper if you are interested?

Lovely idea - a couple of comments if I may. Firstly, we operate www.thebookseekers.com which could help both you and your kids find books in the categories you have created.

I appreciate that for some it is just a political line they have to take, but it does make them sound like they have never worked in a business. Remember the 'we can have pint wine bottles' nonsense - how many of them have you ever seen? None, because no-one with any sense would make them.

I remember giving presentations in the early days of execs having Blackberries when they thought they were smart enough to read emails and still pay attention to what was being presented to them. Spoiler: they weren't.
