Yes, a lot of it is down to the culture, but how much can the culture be influenced by the design of our cities? Unfortunately cities in the US have been built around car use creating that car culture

I spent a weekend in the modern town of Tres Cantos to the north of Madrid: high rise apartments, ground floor shops, restaurants, and open spaces, thronging with people out walking, meeting up in the bars and restaurants with friends and neighbours, and going about their daily lives. Pefect👌

I have enjoyed visiting Hay on Wye since the 1980s - I would say that it has changed quite a lot since those days but with fewer book shops but it seems to have diversified successfully
