We also find that the vast majority of SES measures used to study child and adolescent mental health are caregiver-reported. One of our main recommendations is to survey adolescents (for whom it is already established they can reliably report their own experiences) more directly.

We recommend requiring a higher standard for justifying measurement choice. Some of the measures we saw - relating to language, ethnicity, married / single status, as well as macro-level measures (like province or region deprivation measures) - do not clearly relate to SES.

We find huge variability in SES measures -- from income, education, occupation, material assets, household and family characteristics among many others. Often there is no clear definition of the construct / variables used or even theoretical rationale.
